GUANO APES in the studio:
"Thanks a lot for the kick in the ass"

Formed a good two years ago, the band cut its teeth in lots of clubs between Hanover and Kassel. They then won the "Local Heroes 1996" title and a Rock-Scholarship plus a video production valued at more than 100,000 Marks. Now Guano Apes are in the Horus Studio in Hanover to record their first album and suffer verbal abuse from their producer, Wolfgang Stach. And for this singer Sandra Nasic, guitarist Henning Rümenapp, bassist Stefan Ude, and drummer Dennis Poschwatta are even genuinely grateful.

Masochistic tendencies? No, rather phases of a band that wants to professionalize itself.

Guitarist Henning: "ThatÕs a huge chance for us, but also a lot of work."

The four from the barn in Berensen, close to Lütgenrode, somewhere in the vicinity of Göttingen are not the kind to wait for something to fall in their laps.

13 hours of work daily in the studio demands discipline. Producer Stach is of the opinion that the sessions are sometimes as irritating as a school field trip. Singer Sandra reveals that they just blew off some of the steam at the Greek waiter in the restaurant across the street.

ThereÕs a fairly strange vibe among the troops. But this seems to help. The recordings in Horus have "the roughness", the hardness, according to drummer Dennis PoschwattaÕs analysis.

And whatÕs the result? "WeÕve made a name for ourselves. I do think that something will happen", reckons guitarist Henning. And studio boss Frank Bornemann reservedly exults, "ThereÕs hardly a major record label thatÕs not interested in the Guano Apes.
