For us,
"Dödel Up" is a relatively old title. The first fragments
emerged while we were recording our first album "Proud Like A God"
in 1996/97, but they were never really completed during our work in the
studio and the song was only finished shortly after we had left the studio.
But at that time, we had to go on tour including the song in our repertoire,
because we noticed that it went down well. Then, in time, the song was slightly
modified. So, the multimedia part of the single comes with a nice
gift an "amateur video" shot in May 1997 where we
play a rather incomplete "unplugged" version of "Dödel
Up". This
example shows how such a song changes in time, but still remains the same.
We can even show the origins of some titles for a song, because the line
"Dödel Up" is just an "onomatopoeic expression",
which is even more clearly audible in this early original version. When
we went into the studio in order to record our second album, "Dödel
Up" was, of course, on our recording list, but nobody could imagine
an exact title at that time, and it was only at the end that we decided
to keep to the present working title and moreover, we can confuse
the other countries a bit because they haven't got an "Ö"
and never know how to pronounce it ;-))
And as the song was part of our programme for such a long time, we have
taken a lot of trouble with it in the studio. Several recording tracks
were reserved for special percussions and sitars, which season everything
with "Arabic" influences and make the result even "crazier"!
Originally, we had planned to release "Dödel Up"
in late summer 2000; it was supposed to be the third single taken from
"Don't Give Me Names". But as the Americans wanted to
have us for the promo in the States, a video was not to come off
because we weren't available. In that way, the idea with the comic
cartoon came to our mind. And Arno, our SUPERSONIC product manager,
brought out Hahn-Film from Berlin. They had a lot of "credibility"
gained by realising the "Asterix" and "Werner" movies,
and quickly, we all were enthusiastic, because we feel that this crazy
song deserves an adequate video.
And
so, the video goes too far just as the whole song does and we are
really pleased because both the song and the video are absolutely "typical
for the Apes". Amen!
And as a reaction to the moaning of our fans and they always
kick at our open door with that we recorded two completely
new songs shortly before touring Italy in 2000 they are called
"Cuts" and "Candy Love" two completely
different songs which widen our song spectrum in all directions, and we
are eager to read your judgements in our guest book!
